3rd Raid on Harpers Ferry?

As you can read below, I tried very hard to get my book on the shelves of the National Park Service Book Store in Harpers Ferry, WV.   They were professional and polite, but, in the end, not interested.   Let’s try again!  I believe fiction can be just as enlightening as non fiction.  Especially, if the history books don’t really provide much insight. People visit Harpers Ferry from all over the world to walk its historic streets and alleys (not to mention nearby ruins and mountains).  While it is seemingly frozen in time, the historic events that took place in this town must not be put on the shelf to collect dust.  The raid that occurred here at the hands of John Brown and his band of rebels needs to be re-examined from a totally new perspective.  My book does exactly that unlike any of the hundred of books along the bookstore shelves.  Literally, nothing sparked my interest that rainy afternoon I visited.   Lets start a campaign to have the National Park Service reconsider my request.   Please contact the bookstore manager and ask if they carry “Wrathful Empathies, The 2nd Raid on Harpers Ferry.

Good afternoon Mark!

I have tracked down your title, unfortunately it was not recommended for approval. Simply, we carry very few adult fiction titles.

Have you tried some of the littler shops on High St? They will sometimes carry Harpers Ferry themed books. I refer a lot of people up the hill for ghost stories, since we do not sell those either.

I apologize again for the wait, and I appreciate you considering our shop for your book! Your Vendor Form said to donate the book, so I am taking it to the local free library (after I read it!). Please let me know if I can further assist you in anyway, and please feel free to submit any additional titles in the future.

Thanks!

Thank you for the quick response. I definitely understand the process can take time. I have a book signing at the Winchester book gallery in March. Hopefully, I can get it on the shelves in Harpers Ferry. It is all about local history with a twist. Either way, thank you very much for your attention to my request.

I haven’t received a decision on my desk, so I am not sure of the decision. I will do some searching to see if I can find out where it is in the process.

Sorry for the wait, sometimes it can take awhile for our park liaison to review, and we are currently in the process of switching to a new liaison, as the current one is retiring. I will let you know as soon as I find out any information!

Thanks,

Thank you so much for your kind words about our shop! I’m glad you liked it as much as we do!

Thank you also for your interest in our shop for your title. Please find attached our Vendor Submittal forms. A review copy would absolutely help, as after we review and approve titles, they are forwarded to our park liaison for approval as well. The park approval process can take weeks sometimes, so please feel free to call or email me for updates. We also ask that if you would like your copy back that you include a self addressed and stamped envelope.

I will let you know that we try very hard to keep most of our titles non-fiction, however a historical fantasy book centered around Harpers Ferry may do well here. I’m excited to read your interpretation of our little town! Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns!

Dear Ms. Richards,

I stopped by the bookstore in Harpers Ferry this weekend and was very impressed with the diversity of content on the shelves. If I could be so bold, I think you might be interested in my book for your fiction section.

It is titled, Wrathful Empathies: The 2nd Raid on Harpers Ferry.

As the name suggests, the story takes place in and around Harpers Ferry. Visitors to the your shop who seek intrigue behind the bricks and mortar of the lower town district should enjoy this exciting adventure tale. Quickly, the story is about a band of truth seekers hiking the mountain trails, running the rivers and haunting the taverns in and around that historic town.

If you are interested, I can send a free courtesy copy for your review.

The book is currently listed on Amazon with expanded distribution available for booksellers and resellers.

I really do think the kind of people who visit Harpers Ferry, and, specifically, the NPS bookstore have inquisitive, thoughtful and questioning minds, not to mention, a love for natural beauty and a little mystery. Just the audience for my book.

I look forward to your response whatever it is.

Sincerely,

Mark Ewing.

Truth Without Ideology

“The greatest victim of communism was the soul or spirituality of humans.”

Quote by H.E. Dr. Vytautas Landsbergis Lithuanian statesman and scholar.

Ask yourself why we are not taught anything about the accounting of Communism’s crimes?  Who could keep that secret from our schools, our national narrative, our collective memory?  When I write about the Buddhist concept of the Bardo in my book it is symbolism for many things.  Yes, it represents the soul wandering after death.  But ask yourself what happens to souls who know no truth but the ideological brainwashing they are giving under an authoritarian ideology.  Are they even less prepared for the Bardo after death than the Buddhist?  The picture below is of the Victims of Communism Memorial.  The humans walking towards you become increasingly transparent as their bodies are torn apart.

Imagine what we might look like totally entranced within the lies we are told.  Partial beings increasingly torn asunder because we exist without truth.   My mountain warriors (The Kindred) are in a fierce battle against this wasting of the soul.  They are only awake because they know who they are.  Maybe the genealogies maintained by Lost Mungo are beginning to make more sense now.  Take it a step further, why wouldn’t the Authority want to keep these souls from reincarnating into higher beings in their next life.  Sure makes things a bit easier to control if each successive generation has even less conception of their spiritual nature than the one before.   Don’t be defenseless.  Read my book and join the battle.

Enith’s Lost Soul

There is a passage in my book where Los travels into the underground cavern across from Harpers Ferry.  He sees a swirling blue pool of phosphorescent plasma shimmering within its dark granite walls.  Strange alien creatures stand at its banks.  Grasping some kind of tool in their gray willowy arms, they appear to be screening the water for something.  Not screening, he realized but harvesting.  Suddenly, within the shimmering swirl he spies an infinity of souls.  He desperately searches for Enith.  Calling her name, he flies past the aliens and hovers above the surface of the pool.  Most souls recoil in fear.  They do not realize their state of being.  He calls again for Enith.  From its depth, a figure swims towards the surface.  A hand reaches out to him.

Strong Female Characters…who carry guns

romanian-movie-scene-fagaras-anti-communist-partisans-carpathian-mountains-romania-eastern-europe-partisan.jpgJust to make things equal and all….

I think that in book 2 of Wrathful Empathies (working title “The 14th Colony”)  I will introduce some new female characters that are as capable of violence as Mosby’s Men and The Kindred.   The realization came to me that eventually characters like Zoa will stop running and turn to fight.  Either they will be cornered or just pissed off enough to pick up a gun.  Additionally, my research for images of Partisans to insert into my blog posts kept showing results of historical photos of female bands of fighters all over Europe during World War II and some current Kurdish female fighters in Syria.  At first, I thought the above picture could be used for Mosby’s Men but on closer inspection, I realized these fighters were female.  Reading the caption, I found out that this image is from a Romanian movie about a female group of partisans.  Not what I want for my daughters but I need to recognize historical facts and represent accordingly.

Mosby’s Men

In my book, Authority agents make the BIG mistake of killing two female relatives of a badass group of outlaws.  These men are all related by blood.  Many are ex special forces of the US Army who have returned from the Vietnam War only to find their nation not only doesn’t recognize their sacrifice but treats them with disdain.  Confused, hurt and rejected, they grow bitter and seclude themselves deep in the mountains.  They find ways to make money which happen to all be illegal.  Descendants of Mosby’s Raiders, they know the Blue Ridge mountains and surrounding piedmont and Shenandoah Valley  of Virginia like the back of their hands.  Pissed off at the murder of their kin, they seek revenge and unleash violence upon the Authority agents that stupidly roam their woods in search of escaped witnesses to the murder.   In turns out, I did not have to look too far for my inspiration of these men.   The Wolves of Vinland call the area around Lynchburg, VA home.  You do not want to cross these people.  When they fight, it it is to win.  There are no half measures.  Since they are not in jail, I assume all their current activities are legal.  I don’t think they are a gang but just a fraternal order of men seeking higher consciousness through personal development.  Kind of like a fight club for country boys. Voice In the Wilderness

I discovered a new dissident this week.  Her name is Diana West and she is American!   The author of many books I never heard before until stumbling across her through my own research.  I immediately ordered her book entitled American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character.  This book sheds light on the dark corners of American history.  What she discovers reveals a monster conspiracy that even I could not imagine.  Needless to say, her research and conclusions explain a hell of a lot about current events.  Once again, history is not what it seems.  I have a new understanding of John Brown’s perplexing historical legacy.  He sits outside any defined category of American character analysis.  He is neither hero nor villain.  Clearly, historians find him an uncomfortable character.  John Brown is a threat because of his individual stand against slavery and specific call to the slaves to free themselves.  Clearly, he stood for a progressive society but one measured within the context of the US Constitution and the bible (both new and old testaments).  There was no Marxist doctrine in his thinking.  No wonder he has been cast aside by historians.  I realize now that he is more dangerous to the left than the right and we all know the left writes (and rewrites) the history books.   Just to be clear, anyone who stands up for freedom is a threat.  John Brown cannot take his proper place in American history until the story of the Raid on Harpers Ferry is told without any political filtering.  My book imagines how that story might be told.

Thus Spoke Lost Mungo

Thus Spoke Lost Mungo
One of my favorite books is Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None by Frederich Nietzsche. “ O man, take care! What does the deep midnight declare? “I was asleep— From a deep dream I woke and swear:— The world is deep, Deeper than day had been aware. Deep is its woe— Joy—deeper yet than agony: Woe implores: Go! But all joy wants eternity— Wants deep, wants deep eternity.” The chief character of my book goes by the trail name Lost Mungo. He has sought refuge on top of a mountain to escape human society and find deeper knowledge. He often gazes down into towns from his high perch. While he lives on the fringes of society, he often enters back into the civilized world to spread his wisdom. He wears an eccentric Pith Helmet to blend into the Appalachian Trail thru hiker community of, well, eccentrics, so that he will not be seen in plain sight. Lost Mungo has to go into Harpers Ferry, WV to recruit a college intern (who happens to be predestined for the mission). I was hiking around the heights of the surrounding mountains of this historic river town and decided to capture the moment of my character peering down from his lofty abode. It was a lot of fun. Got snowed on in early Spring. Just added to the enchantment of the day. Lost Mungo is a very old man in my book and has carried a heavy burden for decades. He is ready to pass on but must first find his replacement. Somewhere down there is another character named DB Cooper who will unknowingly be lured into this role.

Zoa Flees Towards Oblivion

girl-running
Gasping for air, Zoa burst out of the High School dance. She sprinted across the football field. Only when she reached the woods, was she able to catch her breath. Finally, she sensed no judgement. Alone within the silhouettes of swaying trees, she realized there was no turning back. She plunged even deeper into the abyss.
