A day with Shannon

My daughter Shannon and I went hiking on the Appalachian Trail.  We got a late start after dropping my oldest daughter Lauren off at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV.

Great little college town.  I strongly encourage a visit.  Its campus inspired my vision for the description in my book of the college radio station where Standing Bear broadcasts the rebel manifesto.

Shannon and I got the Appalachian Trailhead late on a December afternoon.  We had a 8 mile round trip hike ahead of us.  It was cold, of course, with the trail covered in snow.  She was a trooper and never complained even though she was not dressed warmly enough.  We hiked to a great vista and then back through the darkness to my jeep waiting in the parking lot.  Fortunately, I packed 2 headlamps in my daypack.  It was fun hiking along the ridgeline, with a bright moon illuminating the dark silhouettes of barren trees.  It was just the two of us.  Nobody else was crazy enough to be out hiking that cold Winter night.  It was a great little adventure.  Shivering we climbed into my Jeep and blasted the heater.  At her request, we stopped at Taco Bell in Frederick, MD to replenish our energy.

There are 2 short videos posted on my YouTube channel.  Check it out on Bardo Partol.
